THE FIGHT FOR AN EMPIRE
(1604-1713)
The 17th century saw one hundred years of war between the
British and the French, with both sides taking turns being either
victorious or vanquished. Here we see French soldiers boarding a ship just
ahead of advancing British troops.
Caught between two military giants, the Acadian settlers were soon
to have their tranquil lifestyle destroyed forever.
LEAVE OUR HOMES? HELL NO!!
During the
final years of British suppression of the Acadian family unit, harsh
tactics were used to subdue these stubborn settlers. Even after being
driven from their homes and fleeing to the woods, they would return
later. Over and over this
process was repeated until finally permanent guards were posted at each
home forcing its inhabitants to live for an extended period in the
unsheltered wilderness.
